Japan's stock market was buoyant on Tuesday after being closed on Monday. Several major companies were up sharply, including investment company SoftBank, which was up 4.3 percent.
By lunchtime, the Nikkei 225 had risen just over 3 percent, while the broader Topix had risen 2.1 percent.
The Hong Kong-based Hang Seng also had a good trading day, climbing 1.0 percent. The Chinese Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges fell 0.3 and 0.1 percent, respectively.
The Kospi in Seoul rose 0.6 percent.
