Tokyo Car Stocks Rise After US-Japan Tariff Agreement

The Tokyo stock exchange went steadily upwards after the announcement that the US and Japan had agreed on a customs tariff agreement. The Nikkei 225 index had risen 3.2 percent by lunchtime while the broader Topix index had increased 3.1.

It was after 01, Swedish time, that the US President Donald Trump announced that Japan and the US had agreed on the tariffs, and that Japan will open up its market for, among other things, cars.

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba also confirmed that the tariffs on cars will be reduced from 25 to 15 percent.

After the announcement, Toyota's share rose by 13 percent, Honda by more than 10 and Mazda by as much as 17 percent.

Also in other parts of Asia, the stock exchanges are rising. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong had risen by 0.6 percent after some hours of trading.

The composite index in Shenzhen was moving sideways, while the total in Shanghai climbed 0.4.
