Around half of all marriages end in divorce in Sweden, the statistics say. And it's when the summer is coming to an end that most relationships crack.
Often you see that it starts already early during the vacation. Many have a hard time with the thought of a longer vacation together when you're in these thoughts. So you take the step after the summer because then it can't go on any longer, says Charlotte Ljung, who runs Endbright, a digital service for divorces.
Large increase
When the divorce is a fact, many stand unprepared. According to a survey from Länsförsäkringar, newly divorced single parents with two children can get increased monthly costs of around 12,000 kronor.
It has to do with that you need a larger living space per adult and that you should be able to take care of two children. It leads to that you take more loans and loans cost money, says Stefan Westerberg, savings economist at Länsförsäkringar.
Add to that other things that you shared before the divorce, car, subscriptions and online subscriptions. Moreover, not everyone moves the children's wardrobe every other week so then it also needs to be purchased. It becomes quickly many expenses.
The divorce process can be very demanding.
It's really no super cocktail. Partly it can be emotionally stressful and at the same time there are many considerations you have to take a stand on, says Charlotte Ljung and gives the following advice:
Have a few fixed reference points that divide what can or should happen within a certain time frame. The more preparation you have done, the better. Have control over how the law and economy play into the divorce process.
Like a marathon
A divorce often takes longer than what many think.
Many wish that it would be over fairly quickly, but it actually takes time. I usually say that getting a divorce is like running a marathon and you don't enter a marathon untrained, so come prepared, says Ljung.
Stefan Westerberg emphasizes economic foresight.
Protect each other's health and economic well-being by seeing to it that both have the opportunity to save money, he says.
