It was during the second period that Meier kneed Sundqvist. The Swede was left lying on the ice and had to leave; he was then taken off in a wheelchair.

The Swiss player was immediately given a two-minute penalty for the tackle, and the referees reviewed it on video to see if a match penalty should be awarded. Meier avoided that, but the International Ice Hockey Federation has announced that the World Championship Disciplinary Committee has chosen to suspend Meier for one match.

The 29-year-old New Jersey player will therefore miss Switzerland's semi-final against Norway on Saturday.

The host nation Switzerland won the quarter-final 3–1 and eliminated Sweden from the World Championship.
