The law, which was signed by President Joe Biden in April, is set to come into force on January 19. Tiktok wants the Supreme Court to wait for its appeal of a verdict in a lower instance, which went the way of the current government.

When the legislation was adopted, it was motivated by the fact that the USA sees Tiktok as a security risk, among other things with reference to sensitive data from American users being stored in China.

Tiktok has denied that Beijing would have influence over its operations.

The day after the ban is set to come into force, Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the USA. During his previous term, Trump, like Biden, was in favor of banning the popular app, but has since changed his mind.
