TikTok faces possible EU fine over algorithmic ‘rabbit holes’ in For You feed

TikTok is facing a new round of EU fines. The social network is accused of using so-called “rabbit holes” in its algorithms to recommend videos to users based on what they have watched.

The EU is escalating a three-year investigation into TikTok, owned by ByteDance, after finding that users were being fed video clips about topics they had previously viewed - including mental health issues and potentially harmful fixations on body image - according to a preliminary opinion from the European Commission.

The Commission is recommending that TikTok change its “For You” feature.

“Repeated exposure to such content can have serious negative consequences for users’ well-being, including increased depression or anxiety, body dissatisfaction, lower self-esteem, or a worsening of existing eating disorders and mental health conditions,” the European Commission wrote.
