Fighting between federal forces under the authority of Addis Ababa and the regional militia TPLF (Tigrean People's Liberation Front) flared up last week.
The fighting is taking place on several fronts, but government forces are targeting the towns of Alamata and Maychew.
Victims report repeated attacks, such as in Alamata, where a popular market was bombed over the weekend. A hospital in the regional capital Mekele said on Tuesday that it had received more than 40 seriously injured people from the two towns. More than 30 of them were children.
