"What I see we need to do is pause them for the time being, evaluate and streamline," says Tobias Andersson, the Sweden Democrats' business policy spokesperson.
All electricity companies must have introduced power tariffs - a special fee on the electricity bill based on how much electricity is consumed at a given time - by 1 January 2027. Some have had them for a few or several years.
Opened for scrapping
High electricity usage for a short period of time, i.e. when many electrical appliances are running at the same time, will be more expensive. The idea from the legislator is to spread electricity usage over the day, which reduces the load.
Minister of Energy and Enterprise Ebba Busch (KD) has said that the new fees may be stopped because they will have "unreasonable consequences".
The Tidö parties have agreed to review how the law is applied. Companies that have already introduced efficiency fees based them on the regulations that the Energy Market Inspectorate issued in 2022. The authority itself believes, according to information to TT, that it is time to review the regulations so that the companies' fees become easier to understand and more uniform. Now the pressure is increasing because both the SD and the Liberals want the fees to be paused.
"We are open to reviewing them; they are perceived to have had some effects that we did not expect when they were introduced," says Acting Minister of Climate and Environment Johan Britz (L), calling the power tariffs "illogical and expensive."
“Must review”
Tobias Andersson says that it is necessary to ensure that Sweden complies with the minimum level required by the EU and that customers must understand the regulations.
"Your neighbor can benefit from charging the car at night while you don't, and this is completely unreasonable, of course, so we need to look into that."
All opposition parties – S, V, C and MP – have demanded that the introduction of power tariffs be paused to make it easier for households.
