A three-year-old girl in Mexico has died from bird flu, reports the country's health authorities.

The girl, from the northern state of Coahuila, was Mexico's first confirmed case of bird flu, it was announced over the weekend. She died as a result of organ failure.

It is unclear exactly how the girl was infected and no other suspected cases have been detected, according to the authorities.

The bird flu of type H5N1 has spread among animals and some humans in the neighboring country USA. In the past year, 70 cases have been confirmed among humans according to the World Health Organization.
