Simon Edvinsson became the match hero when he scored the decisive 3-2 overtime goal for Detroit in the NHL. The goal came after a failed pass by Toronto's Swedish goalie Dennis Hildeby, who otherwise made 33 saves.
"I thought we could get a scoring chance if I got the puck to Auston Matthews. It was the right decision, but I should have used both hands instead of trying to lift the puck with one hand," Hildeby said after the game.
The puck didn't reach Matthews. Instead, Edvinsson was first to it, raced toward the net and scored on a backhand.
"I saw the opportunity when the goalie was out, and I took the chance. For once I put the puck in the net," Edvinsson said, according to NHL.com, about his fifth goal of the season.
Detroit's Swedish players were otherwise heavily involved in the offense. Moritz Seider's 1–1 goal was set up by Lucas Raymond, who has already qualified for the Olympics, and Albert Johansson had the assist on the 2–2 goal.
Toronto star forward William Nylander was injured in last night's game against Ottawa and did not play against Detroit. Nylander, who has also been selected for the Olympics, is expected to return to action in the near future and his injury status is being evaluated on an ongoing basis, reports CBS .
