According to the non-profit foundation Nordens Ark, which runs the zoological park of the same name in Hunnebostrand, the cubs are an important addition to international conservation work for the highly endangered subspecies of leopard.
Fewer than 1,100 Persian leopards are estimated to remain in the wild. Most of them live in Iran, but they are also found in Armenia, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, among others.
The leopard cubs have now taken their first steps outside the den.
“The cubs have so far stayed close to their mother in the den, but now they are starting to explore the enclosure and develop their natural behaviours,” says Julie Hjelm Kristensen, animal caretaker at Nordens Ark, in a comment.
