Israeli police have shot dead three Palestinians near Jenin on the occupied West Bank. The police claim it concerns members of a "terror cell".

The operation took place in the village of Kafr Qud and was carried out by the Israeli military and the police's anti-terror unit.

"The personnel acted with the aim of neutralizing a terrorist cell that planned an attack and was part of a terrorist organization that is active in the refugee camp in Jenin", it says in a statement from the Israeli police authority.

According to the Palestinian health authority, based in Ramallah, the three who were killed were all men between 20 and 29 years old.

The Israeli military launched an offensive on the West Bank last winter, in connection with the previous ceasefire in Gaza coming into force, to counter armed Palestinian groups.

Since then, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been forced from their homes while Israel has destroyed homes and other buildings in the area.

Violence on the West Bank has escalated sharply in the wake of Hamas's terrorist attack on October 7, 2023 – at least 988 Palestinians, including combatants, have been killed over the past two years.

During the same period, 43 Israelis were killed, including soldiers.

Over 500,000 Israelis live in settlements on the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.
