Three people have died and several been injured in connection with a lightning strike at the temple in Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

The affected had sought shelter in the temple in connection with a thunderstorm.

The accident has not been commented on by the authorities, but the news agency AP has had the death toll confirmed by a spokesperson.

After the accident, the country's tourism minister urged everyone to remove images from social media because they spread "negative information" that could harm the country's tourism.

Angkor Wat is a temple built in the 12th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, but later became a sacred site for Buddhists. Around 2 million tourists visit the temples annually.
