Before the meeting with Alavés, Real Madrid had only won one of the last five La Liga matches and this week they also lost to Manchester City in Champions League football.
Xabi Alonso is a man under pressure, with rumours that he will be sacked just six months after taking over as coach of “Los Blancos”. And things got even worse when Alavés substitute Carlos Vicente equalised 1-1 in the 69th minute, after Kylian Mbappé had opened the scoring midway through the first half.
But Real Madrid got the last word when Rodrygo scored 2–1, after fine preparation from Vinicius Júnior on the left wing.
Xabi Alonso cheered on the sidelines and will probably stay at work for a while longer, despite everything.
In the La Liga table, Real Madrid is second, four points behind Barcelona.
