The governments of EU countries are given too much power over the budget, complains a majority in the EU Parliament.

A letter to the Commission calls for a major change to the proposal for a new long-term budget for the years 2028-35 that was presented this summer.

"The EU Parliament cannot accept this as a basis for initiating negotiations," says Thursday's letter from the conservative EPP party group, the social democratic S&D, the liberal RE and the Greens, which was leaked to the news site Politico Europe , among others.

In particular, the Commission's proposal to merge regional and agricultural support and give member states greater control over it is rejected. On the other hand, it is something that is strongly supported by countries such as Sweden and Germany.

The EU Parliament's dissatisfaction paves the way for an even more difficult process regarding the budget, which needs to be completed by autumn 2027 at the latest.
