The cutbacks are part of streamlining operations and compensating for the costly investments in AI, according to a personnel statement seen by the news agency.
The savings package corresponds to around 8,000 of the company's approximately 79,000 employees. In addition, 6,000 planned positions will not be filled.
"I know this is unwelcome news and that it is causing concern for everyone, but we feel this is the best way forward, given the circumstances," writes human resources manager Janelle Gale.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a series of multi-billion dollar projects and collaborations in AI, while at the same time encouraging employees to use AI services for coding and other tasks.
