There are currently about 20 fires burning in France, according to the country's Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. In the southwest of the country, near the city of Perpignan, firefighters are struggling to contain a giant forest fire that has forced about 10,000 people to evacuate.
"We started seeing smoke last night, then the fire got closer," Charlotte Pignol, one of the evacuees, told AFP.
Residents in Greece have also been evacuated as fires spread in the northern part of the country.
In northern Portugal, the fire service is reported to have controlled 80 percent of the fire that has been burning since last week.
This year's fire season has started unusually early, and comes after a heat wave that has affected large parts of Europe.
