Thousands of people are demonstrating across Denmark against U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to take control of Greenland. "We are not afraid and we are not for sale, never, ever," says Greenlander Sussie.

Pensioner Merete is one of those demonstrating in Copenhagen.

"Unfortunately, I think he is serious," she tells TT.

According to her, the Danes have gone from laughing at Trump's desire to buy the island to feeling deep concern that his desire is anything but a bad joke.

"It's like we've woken up from a hibernation after not caring much about Greenland," says Merete.

That's not how it looks today. Outside Rådhusplatsen in Copenhagen, a sea of people have gathered to show their support for Greenland and the national community. Greenlandic flags are waving in the air, families with children have put on caps with Trump-critical messages and are carrying signs that say, among other things, "Not for sale" and "Make America smart again."

Merete believes that Trump's recent statements about not ruling out military means have caused many to react strongly. She herself has not demonstrated since the 1970s.

"But now I felt it was time," she says.

They were surprised

Sussie is there with her friend Emilia. Both live in Copenhagen but are originally from Greenland's capital, Nuuk.

"Trump is in deep water," says Sussie.

"We are a community"

"We are here to show solidarity and stand shoulder to shoulder. We stand united - in Denmark, Europe and the Nordic countries - against completely unacceptable pressure," says Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen (S), speaking during the demonstration, reports BT.

"It's about showing that Greenlanders are not alone and that we are a community that is important to protect," Thomas Buttenschøn tells the newspaper.

Under the slogans "Hands off Greenland" and "Greenland to the Greenlanders", the demonstrators will march from Rådhusplatsen towards the American embassy.

Similar demonstrations are being arranged on Saturday in several Danish cities, as well as in Greenland's capital, Nuuk.
