According to her, Danes have gone from laughing at Trump's desire to buy the island to feeling deep concern that the desire is anything other than a bad joke.

It's like we've woken up from hibernation after not caring much about Greenland, says Merete.

That's not how it looks today. Outside Rådhusplatsen in Copenhagen, a sea of people has gathered to show their support for Greenland and the national community.

“Absolutely crazy”

Greenlandic flags are waving in the air, families with children are wearing caps with critical messages and are carrying signs that say, among other things, "Not for sale" and "Make America smart again."

Merete believes that Trump's recent statements about not ruling out military means have caused many to react strongly. She herself has not demonstrated since the 1970s.

"But now I feel it is time," she says.

In Denmark, support for Greenland is massive. Flag shops are reporting record sales of Greenlandic flags, which are also increasingly flying in public places.

Jesper Tønnesen, who achieved success with his Trump-critical cap "Nu det Nuuk", brought 350 caps to the demonstration, which sold out in fifteen minutes.

"It's completely crazy," he says, pointing to some empty boxes.

Out in deep water

Sussie is one of several hundred who have donned a cap to protest against Trump. She lives in Copenhagen but is originally from Greenland's capital, Nuuk.

"We are not afraid and we are not for sale, never ever," says Greenlandic Sussie.

"Trump is in deep water."

They are supported by Erik Jensen, former party leader of the Greenlandic party Siumut.

He looks moved when he talks about Danes and Greenlanders standing side by side in a situation he describes as "scary."

"I was really moved when I came up from the train station and saw how many people were there."

Started listening to each other

Jensen was present at Friday's meeting with the American delegation and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S), among others.

"If there is anything positive in all this, it is that we have started to listen to each other and cooperate better," he says.

Under the slogans "Hands off Greenland" and "Greenland to the Greenlanders", the demonstrators will march from Rådhusplatsen towards the American embassy.

Similar demonstrations are being arranged on Saturday in several Danish cities, as well as in Greenland's capital, Nuuk.
