The deceased are migrants who have traveled by boat from mainly West African Mauritania.

The organization counts 10,457 dead up to December 15 and notes that the number of dead has increased by nearly 60 percent compared to 2023.

Among the dead in 2024 are over 1,500 children and 421 women. April and May were the two months with the most fatalities.

Spain's Ministry of the Interior reports that more than 57,700 migrants arrived in Spain by boat up to December 15, an increase of around twelve percent compared to the same period last year. The vast majority of them arrived on the Canary Islands.
