Thousands of British workers in the offshore sector are at risk of losing their jobs because they are too heavy.

New weight limits in the offshore sector in the UK will be introduced in November 2026. From then on, a person working in the offshore sector may not weigh more than 124 kilograms, reports the German news agency DPA, citing the industry association Offshore Energies UK.

The purpose of the rules is to ensure that it is possible to pick up or lower employees on oil platforms by helicopter in emergency situations.

According to the industry magazine, more than 2,500 British offshore workers weigh more than 124 kilograms – and just as many more are in danger of crossing the border.

Graham Skinner, head of health issues at Offshore Energies UK, says that the organization will focus heavily on helping those affected lose weight over the next year.

In the worst case, they could lose their jobs, he says.
