Schillaci passed away earlier in the week after being ill with colon cancer. He is primarily remembered for the home World Championship 1990 when he won the tournament's top scorer award.

The funeral took place in a cathedral in his hometown Palermo. A match jersey from the Italian national team and club team Palermo was placed on the coffin. Scarves from the clubs he represented during his career – Messina, Juventus, Inter and Japanese Júbilo Iwata – were also placed on the coffin.

The funeral was attended by thousands of people who were present in the cathedral and on the square outside. Several football profiles attended, including Giuseppe Bergomi who was team captain during the World Championship summer 1990.

Salvatore Schillaci was 59 years old.
