This year's Olympic medalists can rejoice a little more. The gold and silver medals raise the value of their efforts a little more.

Although the price of precious metals has fallen back somewhat, the price of silver is still three times higher than it was two years ago.

A gold medal is not made entirely of gold; it largely consists of 500 grams of silver with a casing of 6 grams of gold, Forbes writes.

Based on price forecasts for the metals, a gold medal is worth $1,940, or 17,500 kronor, while a silver medal is worth around 9,000 kronor, Stephen Hare, an economist at Oxford Economics, tells Forbes.

The medals are probably worth considerably more than that. Auctions of medals could probably bring in $60,000-80,000, perhaps even more for some really famous athletes' medals, Forbes writes.
