Slay – the word redefined by Charli XCX and used by Kamala Harris supporters to back her – has been named the English word of the year by the British publisher Collins.

"Brat" was the title of the British artist's sixth album and now stands for a "confident, unrestrained, and hedonistic attitude", notes Collins, rather than an "unruly child", which was the previous definition.

"It has become more than the title of a successful album. 'Brat' is a cultural phenomenon that has been picked up by people all over the world and 'Brat summer' has become a lifestyle", says Collins.

Charli XCX has herself described "brat" as "someone who is a bit messy, likes to party, maybe says stupid things and maybe breaks down, but parties through it".

In July, Charli XCX admiringly described Kamala Harris as "brat" on social media, which got the presidential candidate to start using the British artist's song "365" in campaign videos on TikTok.
