An armed drone was spotted at the airport in early August, immediately raising suspicions of an attempt at hybrid warfare. Another drone is believed to have collided with a cargo plane shortly afterwards, but without causing any major damage.

Investigators suspect the attack plan was more extensive than that, according to information provided to German public service radio and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. A third drone and high-explosive material were reportedly found in a field near the airport on August 14.

A Ukrainian transport plane carrying military equipment is suspected of having been targeted. According to media reports, German authorities primarily suspect that Russia is behind it.

Germany is becoming an increasingly important target for hybrid attacks - from increasingly “unscrupulous” parties, says Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He does not name any suspects, but says it is being fully investigated and that the government hopes to come back soon.

The government is imposing costs on those responsible for hybrid attacks. They will have to pay for them, he says.
