An armed drone was spotted at the airport in early August, immediately raising suspicions of an attempt at hybrid warfare. Another drone is believed to have collided with a cargo plane shortly afterwards, but without causing any major damage.
Investigators suspect the attack plan was more extensive than that, according to information provided to German public service radio and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. A third drone and high explosives were reportedly found in a field near the airport on August 14.
A Ukrainian transport plane carrying military equipment is suspected to have been targeted. According to media reports, German authorities believe that Russia is behind it.
