"The film will be Hello Kitty's Hollywood debut on the big screen, where Hello Kitty and her friends embark on a cinematic adventure that is guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages," the film company said in a statement.
The film is directed by Leo Matsuda, who previously directed the short film "Inner Workings" and worked as a storyboard artist on films such as "Zootopia" and "Wreck-It Ralph".
The Japanese company Sanrio introduced the cartoon character in 1974, launching a global phenomenon, with entire stores and amusement parks dedicated to thousands of products featuring Hello Kitty and her friends.
Kitty White (her full name) is often referred to as a cat, but is actually a girl, according to the company Sanrio. It is unclear whether she will speak in the film. She has been completely mute in her animated series.
