In recent years, the police have taken a strong stance against extortion crime by combating international theft gangs, says Linda Staaf Bydénvid at the police's National Operations Department, NOA.

One explanation for this development is the recently established so-called operation centers, which are part of the police's efforts against gang crime. They facilitate the collection of information, the coordination of measures and also the early rejection of people who have come to Sweden to commit crimes.

However, the statistics do not show thefts in commerce, where a record total of 11.3 billion was stolen last year.
