Thedéen refers, among other things, to the fact that the ECB is in the process of developing a digital euro.
The digital euro has quite strong momentum now and we believe, or many say they believe, that it could be introduced in 2029. We have come quite far with the legislative work, says Erik Thedéen.
The Riksbank has previously carried out pilot projects with a Swedish digital krona linked to the blockchain. However, in the 2023 payment investigation, the investigator concluded that there was not sufficient societal need for an e-krona.
But considering, among other things, the work on the digital euro, Thedéen believes that it is now time "to do something again."
We think this raises the issue of at least investigating how a Swedish e-krona would work, he says.
