Günther died during the night of Friday after a short illness, his close friend and theatre publisher Berit Gullberg Thörnqvist confirms to the newspaper.
"He was one of the absolute best, with integrity and great knowledge. It is a great loss for Swedish theatre," she tells DN.
Günther was a leading director in Swedish theatre for several decades, and had his breakthrough in 1987 with "Sacrament", the newspaper writes.
In 2005 he was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet theatre prize, the Thalia Prize.
