After both the theater and the actors received threats via email and on social media, the theater company Calma has decided to cancel the production of "Maria (non) grata".
In an opinion piece on the Catholic news site CathoBel, the performance is described as blasphemous.
Baptiste De Reymaeker, director of the local cultural center in Havelange, insists the performance is “in no way” an attack on the Catholic religion, La Libre writes. He condemns the threats as well as “the nostalgic demand for a return to the legal ban on blasphemy.”
