Scottie Scheffler, ranked number one in the world in golf, has spent January at home on the couch instead of on the golf course.
It was definitely frustrating to watch golf on TV and not be able to play, he says.
But at the end of January, it's time for the 28-year-old American to put on his golf shirt and grip the club again, when the PGA tournament at Pebble Beach in California gets underway.
I tried to push myself pretty hard in the cold last week and it got better and better every day, so I thought I might as well go out and play again.
Cut his hand on a foot
A small, transparent band-aid is all that reveals the hand injury that Scheffler sustained when he was cooking dinner during the Christmas holiday.
Together with his family, the golf star was going to make ravioli from scratch, but since they were in a rented house, they lacked access to the right tools to cut the pasta. Instead, Scottie Scheffler used a wine glass.
I had my hand on top and it broke, he explains, adding that he cut himself on the foot of the wine glass.
"Got so angry"
Scheffler needed to have small glass shards removed from his palm.
It could have been much worse. I actually talked to someone who had done exactly the same thing and the foot went straight through the hand, says Scheffler, continuing:
It was one of those things where I, right after it happened, got so angry with myself. I thought "gee, that was so stupid". But you don't think about it in the moment.
Now he's looking forward to making his debut for the season.
It's a bit weird to do it so late in the year. But yeah, nice to be back, he says.
