The County Administrative Board in Skåne has decided to hunt the wolf on protection grounds after it mauled the elderly Shetland pony Pippi so badly that the pony had to be euthanized earlier this week.
"There have been two attacks in a short period of time and we assess that the risk of further attacks is high. The wolf is in an area where the landscape is open and the availability of wild ungulates is low, but there are many domestic animals. We have also received reports that the wolf has been seen at several other domestic animal herds," says wildlife officer Tom Espgård in a press release.
A DNA analysis shows the wolf is a male from a territory in Västmanland.
