In a post on Instagram, The Who's guitarist Pete Townsend writes that Starkey, who has been with the band since 1996, is no longer a part of The Who.

"Zak has many new projects going on and I wish him all the best", writes Townsend.

It was in April that Starkey suddenly got fired from the British rock band for the first time. He then hinted on social media that there were tensions between him and the band's singer Roger Daltrey, who was not satisfied with Starkey's performance at a concert at Royal Albert Hall in London. Daltrey allegedly complained that he could not hear himself singing, because Starkey was playing so loud.

But just days later, a counterorder came from The Who, who took Starkey back into the band on the condition that he changed his playing style.

After now having been fired for a second time, Starkey writes on Instagram that he is not leaving The Who voluntarily. He also writes that the past weeks have been "hysterical":

"I've been in and out, in and out, out of the band like a bleeding accordion".
