The Dow Jones industrial index noted yet another record level, following a 1.0 percent increase, while the broad S&P500 index rose 0.3 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 0.3 percent.
Donald Trump's nomination of billionaire Scott Bessent as the new US finance minister over the weekend is believed to have contributed to the cheerful mood on the stock exchange, as Bessent has a softer line than the incoming president on issues of trade tariffs and tax cuts that risk fueling inflation.
Several of the major tech giants, such as Apple, Alphabet, and Meta, rose during the day, while chip manufacturer Nvidia – the world's highest-valued listed company – fell 4.2 percent.
