Air traffic in the United States will decrease by ten percent in "high-volume markets," the country's aviation authority FAA announced. The reason is that the authority needs to reduce staff in the wake of the government shutdown.

Bryan Bedford at the FAA said on Wednesday that they had decided not to wait for problems to arise before acting, adding that the shutdown was putting pressure on staff, something that "we cannot ignore."

The FAA will meet with airline representatives on Wednesday US time to agree on how the reduction can be implemented safely.
