The Standing Shooter Fell the Swedes – Debutant Ninth

World Championship debutant Ella Halvarsson had a medal chance when she reached the standing shooting range. It became two misses, but Halvarsson still finished ninth and became the best Swedish athlete in the sprint.

It looked good for a long time for the blue-yellow quartet in the women's World Championship sprint in Lenzerheide.

All Swedish women shot full in prone – and so far, there were four Swedes among the six best in the results list.

But in standing, the mistakes came for all four. Anna Magnusson (20th in goal) and Hanna Öberg (19th) both missed two shots in standing.

Elvira Öberg was faster on skis but followed her teammates' footsteps – and also missed two shots. Öberg finished tenth.

Shot away medal

The last blue-yellow hope was winter's sensation, World Championship debutant Ella Halvarsson. She had a clear medal chance when she came into the valley for the second time.

Halvarsson did not break the pattern, missed two shots as well – and thus there was no medal. Her ninth place was still enough to become the best Swedish, 52.2 seconds behind Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, France, who took the gold.

After the race, Halvarsson was bubbling, despite it could have ended even more fun.

I can't understand that it has gone so well, ninth in the World Championship, she says to SVT.

"Very good position"

Both Halvarsson and Elvira Öberg had good chances of silver if they had shot full.

I'm so incredibly happy and satisfied anyway. A little sour there in standing, on one shot I just felt "no, it didn't fall". But I've done what I can today, says 25-year-old Halvarsson who gets a chance to build on her performance in Sunday's pursuit.

Very good position and it's not that much time left either.

Elvira Öberg had slightly mixed feelings after her first race, considering the illness period before the World Championship.

If it had been a hit there (in standing) I could have felt that it was a good job on the range, considering it's quite tough conditions today, she says to SVT.

Considering I've been sick and all that, it's still a good position ahead of Sunday.

Now the German World Cup leader Franziska Preuss took the silver, 9.8 seconds behind Braisaz-Bouchet and only two tenths ahead of the Finnish bronze surprise Suvi Minkkinen.
