The National Audit Office is giving the government a lesson in how it handles state finances. The conclusion is that fiscal policy does not meet requirements.

The National Audit Office questions, among other things, the fact that certain expenses, such as defense, should be financed outside the state budget, which could weaken budgetary discipline. Previously, all expenditure items were to be included in the state budget.

"Departing from this principle could in the long term lead to an unsustainable level of public sector debt," says Auditor General Christina Gellerbrant Hagberg, in a press release.

The National Audit Office's review shows that the government intends to deviate from the budget targets in the coming years, and that the government is not transparent.

"The government is proposing a very expansionary fiscal policy without having made any calculations as to whether this is needed," says Hedvig Wurnell, project manager for the review.
