The doubles tournament's star pair was on the other side of the net – but that didn't stop André Göransson.
Together with Dutchman Sem Verbeek, he made it to the semifinal in the Australian Open via 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 against Marcelo Arevalo, El Salvador and Mate Pavić, Croatia.
It feels unreal, too good to be true, says Göransson in the victory interview in Melbourne.
I had a good partner who had a good serve. You can't ask for more. Thanks a lot, Sam.
This is the first time the 30-year-old Swede has reached the semifinal in a Grand Slam tournament. Previously, he has reached the quarterfinal at the longest, in Wimbledon 2021.
I did an interview with Sydsvenskan in December and said that if I were to reach the semi in the Australian Open, it would be a very good result, but I also said that I wouldn't be satisfied with that, says Göransson to the Swedish Tennis Association.
I'm sticking to that, I'm not satisfied here.
In the semifinal, third-seeded Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori await.
We met in the second round in the US Open in September. We'll have our revenge now. It'll be fun but a tough match. It's about really being on from the start and playing with the same energy and aggression as before, says André Göransson.
