It completely depends on how I recover over the coming weeks and months. There is not much previous experience of this type of injury in our sport, says the 29-year-old in an interview with the website Ski Racing.
It was in American Killington at the beginning of December that Mikaela Shiffrin crashed in the giant slalom competition. She suffered a deep wound and extensive muscle damage.
I really had luck, it was just a few millimeters from my colon, she says.
Shiffrin hoped for a few weeks' absence, but on Thursday she was forced to undergo an unexpected operation since the wound was not healing as it should.
The injury concerns the oblique abdominal muscle and Shiffrin says it is unclear how much the muscle will tolerate during skiing.
We'll give it a few weeks to see. I think we'll get a clearer picture every day, says Shiffrin.
The winter's big highlight is the World Championship, which takes place in Saalbach, Austria, in February.
