The original series was broadcast between 2003 and 2012 and was about a gang of friends in an American small town.

The new season takes place 20 years later, the young people have become adults and are themselves teenage parents, writes Deadline. The viewers get to follow best friends Brooke Davis, played by Sophia Bush, and Peyton Sawyer, played by Hilarie Burton-Morgan.

According to Sophia Bush, it's only now that the time is ripe for a sequel:

We've been asked to revive the series for so long, and I think we've all said for many years that it's a definite no, said Sophia Bush at an American podcast gala recently.

It is not known when the new season will be broadcast, nor which other original cast members will appear.
