The 26-year-old Sporting Lisbon striker has scored 15 goals in 26 international matches. But after the weekend's match against Famalicão, Gyökeres is forced to withdraw.
And that when he had finally got going again with his goal-scoring.
He had problems all last week and over the weekend, where he played 90 minutes with some pain. And afterwards, he felt that he wasn't in top shape, so he won't be participating, says Tomasson.
Gustaf Nilsson, Club Brugge, replaces him.
Larsson also injured
Midfielder Hugo Larsson, Frankfurt, and goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt, AIK, will also miss the gathering due to injury.
The former was forced to leave the match injured over the weekend and needed an MRI scan to determine the extent of the injury. Now it's clear that Larsson will miss the gathering – which will be the second consecutive one he's forced to withdraw from.
This time, "JDT" had planned to give Larsson a start.
Really sad for Hugo, of course. I had thought of playing him with Lucas Bergvall in midfield, but now it won't happen, says Tomasson.
National team coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has called in Benjamin Nygren, FC Nordsjælland, to replace Larsson. The replacement for Nordfeldt will be former Hammarby goalkeeper Oliver Dovin, who currently plays in Coventry.
Olsen plays against Luxembourg
The national team gathered on Monday in Marbella to prepare for the international matches against Luxembourg on Saturday and at home against Northern Ireland on Tuesday next week.
Robin Olsen is back between the posts in the national team for the first time since June last year – and takes up the competition with Viktor Johansson.
Olsen makes his comeback against Luxembourg.
Robin plays the first match, Viktor the second. Both know about it. There are two really good goalkeepers. Viktor has done really well in the Nations League and Robin has all his experience and everything he's achieved before.
We have two good goalkeepers and we have a few more (Jacob Widell Zetterström, Kristoffer Nordfeldt). We're happy that they push each other, as it should be in a competitive environment.
With both Gyökeres and Dejan Kulusevski injured, the national team coach gets the opportunity to see other players in the national team role.
Maybe it opens up for a start for Anthony Elanga, whom Tomasson sees as a player who can handle several different positions.
He's flexible. I'm glad he's here, says Tomasson.
