The Stockholm Stock Exchange fell on Thursday. The broad OMXS index fell 0.9 percent.

The stock market rose cautiously in early trading, but then turned downward. Before the turn, the narrower heavyweight index OMXS30 managed to record a new record high.

The best performing company on that index was defense company Saab, up 1.7 percent. Clothing giant H&M also performed strongly, closing up 1.3 percent.

At the other end were Tele2 and technology trading company Addtech, which fell 3.8 and 3.6 percent respectively.

Tissue company Essity fell 0.7 percent. On Wednesday evening, the company announced that it had purchased an American business for over three billion kronor.

In the US, things were a bit mixed on Wednesday after Congress finally agreed on a budget deal, which now opens the government apparatus after the record-long shutdown. After just over two hours of trading on Thursday, the leading indexes on Wall Street were clearly down.

The leading indices in Europe also fell.

The krona has strengthened. Late in the afternoon, one dollar cost 9.39, while the euro is quoted at 10.93.
