Hockey star Brad Marchand has left his NHL club in Florida to help a friend whose 10-year-old daughter has died of cancer.

Marchand took over as guest coach of a youth team on Wednesday evening in place of his friend JP MacCallum, who is the regular coach of the team.

Marchand is a co-owner of the team in his hometown of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The match served as a fundraiser for the affected family.

Among other things, a signed match shirt from Marchand will be raffled off.

"Welcome to celebrate a fantastic evening in the arena for a 10-year-old girl who loved the sport with all her heart," Marchand wrote on Instagram before the match.

The 37-year-old star, two-time Stanley Cup champion and Olympic contender on Canada's all-star team, missed Florida's game against Anaheim on Wednesday night and is expected to be back when the champion team of the last two years meets Dallas on Saturday.
