The trade, which is described as a huge deal in the NHL, means that Quinn Hughes is now leaving Vancouver, where he has played eight seasons since being selected seventh overall in the 2018 NHL Draft.
Hughes, who is seen as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, has already been selected for the US Olympic team in Turin next year and scored 92 points in the 2023–24 season when he won the Norris Trophy as the best defenseman.
"Quinn is a great person, a great player and one of the greatest in Canuck history," Vancouver Ice Hockey Director Jim Rutherford said in a statement.
Vancouver, however, has been a disappointment this year and is last in the Western Conference. In exchange, the club will receive, in addition to Swede Liam Öhgren, 21, Marco Rossi, 24, and Zeev Buium, 20, as well as the right to select a player in next year's NHL draft.
