The museum is housed in the 17th-century Hellbrunn Palace, where several scenes from the five-time Oscar-winning musical film were shot.
The film is set in Austria in 1938, where governess Maria falls in love with widower Georg von Trapp as the Nazis take power.
Among the museum's first guests was Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of the family whose story inspired the film.
It's intimate enough to really get a feel for the story of both "The Sound of Music" and the von Trapp family singers - my relatives. I'm very proud of that, she said.
The exhibition also tells the story of the real von Trapp family, separating the story from the film version.
The museum is open until November 1 and reopens in March.
