The episode airs on Sunday night, U.S. time, which also happens to be Groening's 72nd birthday.
He says that about 15 years ago he learned that telling the media "we are probably closer to the end than the beginning" led to headlines saying the series was being canceled.
"I've learned to say that there's no end in sight. We're still having fun," Groening told the magazine.
One of the fun aspects of his various projects, he continues, is that they never seem to end.
"The Simpsons" continues. "Futurama" has come and gone and come back again. And who knows what's next? It's always surprising.
