The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was injured in a shooting during a campaign meeting. Two people have died in the shooting, one of whom is the suspected shooter.
This is what we know about what happened.
Where?
Butler, Pennsylvania in the USA. At a campaign meeting, just days before Donald Trump is officially expected to be elected as the Republican presidential candidate ahead of the American election in November, a shooting occurred. It was the last campaign meeting before the Republican Convention, which starts on Monday.
When?
Saturday afternoon, local time. Donald Trump was on stage and had spoken for a short time when shots were suddenly heard.
Was anyone else injured?
Two people have died after the shooting, according to Richard Goldinger, district attorney in Butler County. One of them is the shooter, the other a spectator who was sitting in the audience, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a retired firefighter from Pennsylvania.
Two other people who were in the audience are seriously injured, according to the Secret Service. They were treated at the hospital on Sunday.
In pictures, Donald Trump can be seen bleeding from the ear as he is escorted to safety by his bodyguards from the scene. Trump himself writes on his platform Truth Social that the upper part of his right ear was hit by a bullet. He walked, with support, down from the stage. Donald Trump's staff say that the former president is doing well and receiving care.
What do we know about the shooter?
The FBI has identified the man who shot the ex-president as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He lived in Bethel Park, a suburb of Pittsburgh and has no previous convictions in the state of Pennsylvania.
He is said to have registered as a Republican ahead of the election but also donated $15 to a liberal organization.
The shooter was not inside the meeting but on the roof of a nearby building, which means he did not go through the security check that all participants at the campaign meeting underwent. The police, according to CNN, failed to follow up on reports that he had behaved suspiciously.
What do we know about the motive?
The shooting is being investigated as an attempted murder of Donald Trump, reports AP.
President Joe Biden said in a televised speech on Sunday that the federal police FBI have not yet been able to establish a motive and he urged caution against spreading rumors.
How does the incident affect the convention?
The Republican Party Convention, where Donald Trump is officially expected to be nominated as the party's presidential candidate, will still be held as planned, according to a statement from the party. The convention starts on Monday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Trump is expected to speak on Thursday, and has announced after the shooting that he will travel there already on Sunday.
