The ice hockey club Växjö is forced to do without three regular defensemen in the away match against Luleå – for an unusual reason. The players are expecting children at the same time.

Växjö is facing an acute shortage of defenders during the team's Norrland tour in the SHL.

When the team travels north for Thursday's match against Luleå, three of the team's American defenders are missing: Brogan Rafferty, Brian Cooper and Zach Giuttari, according to Smålandsposten .

"We have a situation with three defenders who are going to become fathers more or less at the same time," says sports director Henrik Evertsson on the club's website.

To fill the gaps, 24-year-old Elias Lindgren is being loaned from the Swedish hockey team Vimmerby. He played in an away match against Karlskoga as recently as Wednesday.

There are five regular defenders left in the squad: Joel Persson, Keegan Lowe, Petter Granberg, Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Elias Rosén.

Växjö ends the tour against Skellefteå on Saturday before the SHL reaches the halfway point of the season and enters a twelve-day national team break.
