World number one Carlos Alcaraz is out of the US Open after losing to Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets, 1–6, 5–7, 4–6.

Alcaraz won the title in 2022 and was one of the pre-tournament favorites in this year's edition of the tournament in New York. The Spaniard has had an incredibly strong year with wins in both the French Championships and Wimbledon, but the last grand slam tournament of the year ended disappointingly.

For 74th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp, the win is a significant scalp and he will face Jack Draper in the third round.

I'm actually at a loss for words. It's been an incredible evening for me, says van de Zandschulp after the match.

The exit in the second round is Alcaraz's worst result in a grand slam tournament since Wimbledon 2021.
