She was imprisoned in Russia for ten months in 2022. Now the basketball star Brittney Griner is starting a new chapter in her career.

The 34-year-old becomes a free agent and leaves Phoenix after eleven years to play for Atlanta in the WNBA.

Becoming a free agent was what I wanted most. And now I've found where I want to go on my own, she says in a video on Instagram.

It was a tough decision since I'm leaving what's familiar, the only thing I've known in my career.

New contracts in the WNBA cannot be signed until February 1, but Griner's agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas confirms to AP that the star center will sign a one-year contract with Atlanta.

Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison in Russia in 2022 for drug offenses. After ten months, she was released following protracted negotiations between the USA and Russia. This was in a highly publicized prisoner exchange for arms dealer Viktor But.

Brittney Griner also plays for the USA national team and has, among other things, won three Olympic Games gold medals.
