In the 1981 relationship drama "On Golden Pond," Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda played an ageing couple who reunite with their daughter, played by Jane Fonda, after several years.

The role was Henry Fonda's last, and both he and Hepburn were awarded Oscars for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.

The fictional depiction of Janis Joplin's short and stormy life, "The Rose" from 1979, was Bette Midler's feature film debut and earned her an Oscar nomination.

Now Midler is paying tribute to the director on Instagram :

"I was so lucky to meet him when I did. He was the actor's whisperer; just a few words were all it took to understand what was needed. So many happy memories."
